2024 Chipping Events

Chipper events in 2024 require online preregistration.  In 2024, there are 2 kinds of events.  June 8th and July 27th are with the BCVFD new mobile chipper and chips will blast onto the owners parcel..  The June 28th and August 3rd events are “haul your own” events at the Fishtail Ranch and the Ranch will dispose of the chips.

Brazos Canyon Fire Department Chipping Events

The BCVFD chipper is mobile.  The piles must be near a decent road that can easily be traversed by a truck with the big chipper.  It will be a first run for the new chipper and is operated by  the volunteers of the BCVFD.  The chipper will go to the site and chip.  Up to 4 limb piles per resident are allowed.  Limb piles must be a max of 6x6x6 feet and a max of 5″ in diameter with the large end of the slash oriented toward the road.  The chips will be broadcast onto the land where the limb piles are located.   Piles of chips can generate heat so we’d prefer to spray them around unless the owner can assure us that the pile of chips will be moved relatively quickly.  Please let us know how well the process works for you this year and what we can do to improve it.

In addition, there are three more chipping events planned so far for 2024.  August 3 is a “haul your own” events where residents take their limbs to be chipped at Fishtail Ranch.   At these two “haul your own” events, the Ranch disposes of the chips, but can only be delivered to the ranch on the event date..  On July 27th, the BCVFD will again haul their chipper to the Upper Brazos for “on site” chipping at the location of the parcel owner’s limb piles.

Piles of chips can generate heat so we’d prefer to spray them around unless the owner can assure us that the pile of chips will be moved relatively quickly.  Please let us know how well the process works for you this year and what we can do to improve it.

We are looking for more volunteers all the time so if you have an interest, we can always use the help.  (Even on June 8th we need volunteers to accompany and assist the BCVFD  to prep the piles of limbs to facilitate chipping.)

BCVFD LIMB PILE GUIDELINES

  • Piles must be stacked by 8 a.m. on the day before the scheduled chipping day.
  • Chips will be broadcast onto the parcel owners property at the location of the Limb piles.
  • The owner is responsible for spreading/raking the chips.  Unless preauthorized, chips will not be piled into large piles.  There is small danger of chips generating heat and even causing fire, so chips will be shot/spread into a thin layer on the owners parcel near the piles.
  • Chipping will take place on Saturdays.
  • Improperly stacked piles, and any piles stacked after 8 a.m on a groups service start date, may not be identified or collected.
  • Stack piles neatly (no bags), with the large ends of branches facing the road.
  • Place piles within 5 feet of the roadway, but not touching the road or in/blocking drainage ditches.
  • NO piles on or in driveways, piles must be on a roadway accessible to the crew and equipment.
  • Maximum pile size is 6 ‘x 6′ x 6’. There is a 4-pile limit per address for each sign up period.
  • Maximum acceptable material diameter is 5″.
  • After crews have removed your pile, clear away any remaining branches, needles and debris.
  • Do not combine piles with neighbors’ piles or place piles in other neighbors yards or in other neighborhoods.
  • NO piles that have been created by any machinery.
  • NO piles of raked debris.
  • Piles with thorns and/or ground juniper will NOT be chipped.
  • Piles that have rocks, dirt/debris, trash, or root wads will NOT be chipped.

Volunteers Needed

If you can help on with Chipping Events, please let us know when (morning or afternoon), what duties you can help with addition we are looking for volunteers for that day. E.g. – Help your neighbors load slash, – Help unload slash at the chipper site, – Staff the entry point and inspect loads to ensure there are no nails, no trash and no loose needles, – Provide lunch or water or snacks. If you have a trailer and tie-down straps and are willing to drive the neighborhoods, we’ll assign some crew members to help you load and haul. Email KurtxFire@gmail.com if you can volunteer indicating how and when (morning or afternoon) you can help and which days you are available.
