Community Chipping Events

Reducing flammable materials in the Brazos Canyon is one of the most effective ways property owners can reduce the risk of wildfires in our community.  The Brazos Firewise Team in conjunction with the Brazos Canyon Volunteer Fire Department and Fishtail Ranch provide opportunities for Brazos Property Owners to  safely dispose of limbs they have removed from their property.  Advanced Registration is required for all Community Chipping Events.

Please note, these events are for residents of the Brazos Canyon Fire District only, not for contractors or tree service vendors.

Self-Haul Chipping Event Guidelines

  • Maximum of 3 load per property owner for self-haul chipping events
  • Maximum diameter of limbs is 8″
  • No thorns, pine needles or leaves accepted
  • No construction materials or metal should be placed in brush piles
  • No raked debris, rocks, dirt, trash or root wads should be placed in brush piles
  • Piles with thorns or ground juniper branches will not be accepted
  • Please stack limbs into trailers to support easy removal
  • Large ends of branches should face the rear of the truck or trailer
  • No mechanical loading as branches must be hand lifted out of trucks or trailers
  • No early or late hauling

On-site Chipping Event Guidelines

  • Limbs need to be stacked two days before the event.
  • They must be stacked neatly and not compressed.
  • The large ends of the limbs should be facing the road.
  • Please be kind and stack limbs so they can be easily lifted and carried to the chipper.
  • Limbs are limited to 8″ in diameter and less than 5′ in length.
  • Small bits and tiny unattached branches and thorny shrubs should be thrown in the trash and won’t be picked up.
  • They must be directly adjacent to, but not on, a real major roadway (The road must be level and easily passable by a passenger car) with a maximum of three 5’x5’x5′ piles of limbs per household.
  • The chips will be broadcast onto the property adjacent to the piles, so the limbs must be piled on the owner’s land (not on someone else’s land.)

Volunteers Needed

Community Chipping Events are a vital step in protecting our community and they cannot happen without the support of community volunteers.  Volunteers are needed to assist with moving limbs from brush piles to the chipper for on-site events and  unloading loads for self-haul events. Additional volunteers are needed to help with event registration, providing meals and water for volunteers, etc. If you can help in any capacity, before during or after a chipping event, please contact a member of the Firewise team listed on the Contact page , complete the Neighbors Helping Neighbors form or email info@brazosfirewise.com.

The chipping events are challenging events and require detailed scheduling, hard work, trained personnel, expensive equipment, and lots of volunteers.  We are asking that residents requesting to have limbs chipped consider donating at least a couple of hours to the Firewise effort by signing up to help on Brazos Firewise.com.  (This could be helping on chipping days, volunteering to help your neighbors mitigate, stuffing envelopes, providing lodging to Firewise experts, bringing snacks to the June 7th event or similar.)  There are two type of chipping events.  The BCVFD events involve the chipper coming to your home and broadcasting the chips onto your property.  Chipping Events at Fishtail Ranch are at a fixed location and participants must haul their limbs, by truck or trailer to the site on the specified dates.
