Early Spring is one of the best times to cut trees and Gambel Oak because most migrating birds have not yet arrived and have not yet started nesting. Additionally, vegetation is generally more moist (than summer) with the late snows and early rains reducing the risk of fire from sparks from saws, weed whackers and heavy equipment.
The Brazos “Firewise Model Home” is almost complete.
Plan to visit this Saturday May 2nd!
The Demonstration House is located near in the Upper Brazos Area on State Road 512. Signage and address announcement coming very soon. There will be free literature to guide the creation of defensible space around your property, as well as free snacks, knowledgeable fire mitigation practitioners, maybe a few firefighters, and some free1/8 mesh to cover your exterior vents and reduce the risks from embers in the event of a fire.
Learn about your essential first steps – home hardening and eliminating vegetation in the Home Ignition Zone. The 2026 BCVFD Chipper dates will be announced and there’s lots of opportunities to learn, a get the latest on State Road 512 clearing, or just visit with your neighbors. We’ll be looking for you from 9 AM to 2 PM on Saturday.
We are all in this together! (If you can spare 5 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour or two, stop by and say “Hi.” (If you bring your gloves, wear boots and slip on a hat, you can help us put the finishing touches on the defensible space around your longtime neighbor’s home by raking a bag of needles, hauling a load of gravel or whacking some weeds.) This event will get you warmed up to start your own defensible space projects on your Brazos home.
