2025 Wildfire Preparedness Day - May 3rd
🔥Brazos Fire Mitigation Season Kick’s off🔥
Brazos Firewise is joining the NFPA in kicking off the fire mitigation season on May 3rd. Please make a plan to improve the defensible space around your home and take advantage of the programs available in the Brazos:
- Demonstration House: There will be a Firewise Volunteer project and Demonstration house on May 3rd to help a senior neighbor improve the defensible space around their home. Come rake, spread gravel or cut some oak while learning about the level of effort to mitigate and how to prioritize your efforts. Mark your calendar – 9am – 2 PM May 3rd. Location to be announced soon.
- Free Literature and Fire Screen: In addition to local mitigation buffs, there will be opportunities to get some useful guides on protecting your home and learning to “live with Fire. To help get your effort started we’ll be offering free 1/8 inch fire mesh for covering vents on your home.
- Get Started on Your Home: Set aside some time to launch your 2025 fire mitigation plan. We’ll have a list of 10 quick projects that you can do to begin the fire mitigation adventure.
- Apply for Fire Mitigation Assistance: Over 60 Brazos neighbors have applied for fire mitigation assistance and we’ll show you how you too can apply for funds that will be reducing fuels in the Brazos in 2025.
Early Spring is one of the best times to cut trees and Gambel Oak because most migrating birds have not yet arrived and have not yet started nesting. Additionally, vegetation is generally more moist (than summer) with the late snows and early rains reducing the risk of fire from sparks from saws, weed whackers and heavy equipment.
Remember: Be Safe! At over 7,000 feet in elevation it easy to overdue it. We recommend a 5 year plan for getting all your fire mitigation accomplished.
The Brazos “Firewise Model Home” is almost complete.
Plan to visit this Saturday May 3rd!
The Demonstration House is located near Fishtail Road on State Road 512. Signage and address announcement coming very soon. There will be free literature to guide the creation of defensible space around your property, as well as free snacks, knowledgeable fire mitigation practitioners, maybe a few firefighters, and some free1/8 mesh to cover your exterior vents and reduce the risks from embers in the event of a fire.
Learn about your essential first steps – home hardening and eliminating vegetation in the Home Ignition Zone. The 2025 BCVFD Chipper dates will be announced and there’s lots of opportunities to learn, apply for a defensible space grant, get the latest on State Road 512 clearing, or just visit with your neighbors. We’ll be looking for you from 9 AM to 2 PM this Saturday.
We are all in this together! (If you can spare 5 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour or two, stop by and say “Hi.” (If you bring your gloves, wear boots and slip on a hat, you can help us put the finishing touches on the defensible space around your longtime neighbor’s home by raking a bag of needles, hauling a load of gravel or whacking some weeds.) This event will get you warmed up to start your own defensible space projects on your Brazos home.
We hope to see you Saturday!
