Extreme Fire Danger, NOW! ...But it's only February?

If you haven’t been up to the Chama area, you may not be aware of just how dry and dangerous the current fire conditions are. We had a grass fire along Highway 84 on December 7th that burned 82 acres and was fueled by winds. Efforts by our local crews extinguished the fire with no structural damage, but it could have been much worse.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings and Potential Fire Danger

Be extremely careful with fire and the potential causes of fire.

  • Operate your stove/fireplace safely
    • Ensure you have screened chimney cap
    • Ensure your Chimney is professionally cleaned annually
    • Ensure firewood is stored away from your house until needed,
    • Operate Stoves per manufacturer’s instructions including all warnings
    • Ensure fire place ash is cold and wet before disposing.
  •  Monitor and adhere to The Rio Arriba County Fire Bans and Warnings due to wind and dryness.
  • Check your extinguishers and smoke alarms.
  • Operate saws and other equipment safely and consider keeping extinguishers handy.
  • Secure all safety chains and cargo properly when towing a trailer. Dragging trailer safety chains throw sparks and its one of the leading causes of forest fires in Rio Arriba County.
